Sometimes I write stuff I want to share with the world. It ends up here.

Everyone is related

2008-04-13 Everyone is related1

I've (re)discovered genealogy (a word I will never learn to spell correctly) on the Internet, as a social phenomenon - a genealogy 2.0, if you will.

I have been using Google, Mormons and other sites in my previous quest for relatives - dead or alive - but, until now, it's been lonely work.

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon (via a blog about log-in interfaces) a site that combines genealogy and social networking. It's possible to invite your relatives (at least the living ones with email adresses) and build a family tree together. The fun starts when the invited relatives also invite their relatives, thus making the tree large and wide.

The main flaw of the site is that there isn't any possibility to merge trees (yet), so if you're related to me in any way, please contact me so that we can build our tree together.

1) The headline is stolen from their tagline.

Gaimanthings

I really like Neil Gaiman's books and have read most of them (the huge exception being his comic opus "Sandman", but it's on my list). Hence, it was something of a surprise (shock, really) that his site/blog totally had passed me by.

At the site i found several things that might delight people who like Gaiman as well as those who are merely curious.

  • Neil is releasing "American Gods" as a free e-book (not downloadable, alas, but readable online). It's a great opportunity to familiarise one self with one of Gaiman's best books (IMHO). The e-book is released on the 28th of February 2008 and is available for a month.
  • For persons unable or unwilling to read there's also a downloadable short story called "A Study in Emerald".
  • During the year, two new books are scheduled to be released. The first one is "Odd and the Frost Giants", released for the World Book Day; the second one, "The Graveyard Book", is just finished.

Lots to look forward to.

500 historical persons - that's humor

2007-11-09 500 historical persons - that's humor

I've discovered a hilarious podcast.

Anders Jansson and Johan Wester from HippHipp (a Swedish comedy show) is going to have a show about 500 dead and living persons in Lund this autumn. As a marketing thing they've created a weekly podcast in cooperation with Sydsvenskan.

Every show they invite a well known person and talk about five historical persons that has meant a lot to them.

It's often quite silly and always extremely funny. I laugh out loud on the train to and fro work.

Download the podcast here ->> (N.B. It's in swedish.)

In the autumn, giants throw marshmallows in the fields. Nobody knows why.
